America: Losing the War on Our Rights

Fiercely protective of my large, lush garden, I am constantly battling the devastation that occurs by the critters foraging through my flowers and vegetables. In fact, I am so protective that I have enclosed my garden with split rail and turkey wire to keep my dogs out as well. Gnawing the root systems underneath, munching on the leaves and blooms overtop, and treading over my plants, the bunnies, squirrels, chipmunks and moles cause me much distress. Of course, I have tried every method conceivable, capturing the rabbits and driving them miles from my home, trapping chipmunks and squirrels and relocating them as well, and filling the mole holes with Wrigley's Juicy Fruit gum. When any of these critters are on the other side of the split rail, however, they are more than fair game for my two dogs. In fact, when the smaller of my two – a little Cocker/Shih Tzu catches a chipmunk, it is worth a picture because he is reminiscent of Daniel Boone with the furry tail hanging out of his mouth.
My critters are similar to the immigrants who are forging through Roger Barnett's 22,000 acre
For the past 10 years, people have been unlawfully entering this man's property as a gateway to
None of this matters because 16 illegal immigrants have sued Mr. Barnett for $32 million dollars for ‘violating their civil rights and inflicting emotional distress.' Talk about emotional distress? Imagine what the violations of Barnett's rights have cost him in time, money and energy? Yes, this man carries a gun, something I've been tempted to do in my garden and my critters aren't even trespassing – they live on my property!
The question here is not one of illegal immigration but one of common sense and the rights of Americans. One of the definitions of the word trespass is to enter unlawfully upon the land of another. This is truly the crux of the problem. One might even forget that they are illegal immigrants. One need only realize that these people are unlawfully entering someone else's property and damaging it as well.
How we deal with these people entering our country illegally is one thing but when they destroy someone's property in the process, the picture changes dramatically. We are entitled to the right of our own property and the right not to have others damage or destroy it. This is a no-brainer.
What rights do illegal immigrants have in this situation? Anyone in
But uncommon sense has reared its ugly head once again, because nine lawyers from the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (an organization originally founded to protect the rights of legal citizens of Latin-American descent) are handling the case for the ‘illegals;' and, earlier this week, a jury awarded four of the women $73,000 for claims of assault and infliction of emotional distress.
Barnett and his lawyer are encouraged, however, because they view the case as a 95% victory since the jury cleared the rancher of the civil rights violations charges.
Barnett didn't win. Illegal immigration won. These people will continue to trespass; they will continue to litter; and they will continue to destroy his property. Heaven forbid he someday loses his cool and kills one of them.
Thankfully, I don't have to deal with illegal immigrants trespassing on my property, just cute little furry critters that cause me distress from time to time. And I am blessed because I've got my own border patrol to help nip the problem in its butt!

More commentsGreat article. We need people in this country that can still make sense.John,You are so right. It does make you wonder, doesn't it?Nancy
Another excellent article Nancy and very accurate. Sometimes I wonder how we get so many nincompoops in our government.Joel,Thank you for your comment. Nincompoop is too nice a word. I think political correctness is a large part of the problem. (Oh, now there's another article!)Nancy
Nancy,Great article. The deliverance was splendid. Thaks for sharing this with us.Oh Ronyae,I loved those words: The deliverance was splendid. Thanks much,NancyOh Nancy,I am blushing over here ... No, the thanks is for you!
I'm confused by this:"The question here is not one of illegal immigration but one of common sense and the rights of Americans. One of the definitions of the word trespass is to enter unlawfully upon the land of another. This is truly the crux of the problem. One might even forget that they are illegal immigrants. One need only realize that these people are unlawfully entering someone else's property and damaging it as well."Wasn't America first the home of the American Indians who were then treated rather badly by 'immigrants' whose descendants came to rule there?Meanwhile, I don't think illegal immigration is the problem as bad behaviour is by no means restricted to illegal immigrants. Most criminals (this includes thieves) in the USA are Americans surely? Should we shoot them all also?Yes, Creative Blogger. This nation was taken from the American Indians.I think you missed the point of the article. Roger Barnett has rounded up 12,000 people in the past 10 years and handed them over to the US border patrol. Can you fathom what that must be like? 12,000 illegally trespassing on his land and destroying the property for which he pays taxes and from which he makes his living.Yes, our prisons are filled with American criminals but you might be surprised at how many illegal immigrants are in our prisons as well.NancyIt is a sad situation when those doing wrong can sue, we get all kinds of nonsense like this in the UK too. We get sued if a burglar falls through a 'non burglar safe skylight' while robbing our home.........yes our skylights must take the weight of a burglar else we can be sued.
But when considering the reason we have illegal immigrants in the first place I can't help but think we reap what we sow.
Nancy, you know this is not directed at you, you did a great job, but as I read the comments I am amazed and actually have few words and that for me is a rare moment. It is talked about, talked about and talked about, yes around kitchen tables but when will reality set in. We talk as if laws, property rights, sin is all ok and that is the answer to what you write to. If it works for me it is ok. That is America today. Rights, what is that? Republic, what? It is now called the Law of Selective Application. What ever works is ok. Best wishes.
Wonderfully well written article, Nancy. I loved it. I feel for you and your 'critters'. Living in the country, we have the same problem, but we pretty much let everything grow wild--even our flowers. Thanks for a lovely article.Sandra
Thank you for writing this article. I have many different views on this subject, but I think you have said it all here. Another wonderful article. Thanks!

It makes my blood boil when I think about what is happening to our country. Thank you for your very stimulating article.Sincerely,Linda D
I read yesterday that more than 100,000 Iraq people have been killed in the American Invasion. Many more will be left homeless and maimed. I wonder if anyone will ever be held accountable for this atrocity?
