A God-Given Voice

Voice Dynamic
This past week I heard from a customer who had purchased my DVDs in the beginning of the year. When I first spoke to Vicky in January, I heard a voice that sounded like a child, not just in the quality but even in the enunciation of her words. I was deeply concerned for this 55-year-old woman because I am fully aware that a childlike voice is not an asset, either professionally or personally. Generally, I have found that women who are over 21 and sound like an 8-year-old have suffered some form of abuse in the early years of their childhood development. (Likewise, I have found that men who sound like women have suffered from abuse as well.) In Vicky's case, however, she told me that she had not been abused. She loved her parents and had a good relationship with them. Her sister, on the other hand, was aggressive and quite outspoken. In seeing the reaction of her parents to her sister, Vicky retained her childlike sound so as not to disappoint or anger her parents.
Vicky is a devout Christian who accepted Christ as her Savior in 1999; and, in doing so, discovered that she can speak in tongues. While working on the lowering of her pitch (highness or lowness of sound – not the volume which deals with the loudness or softness of sound), Vicky found that her ‘real' voice is the same voice she hears when she speaks in tongues.
Upon reading her words in her email, I knew I had to talk to her. So I phoned Vicky, we talked, and she was able to speak in tongues over the phone. Bear in mind that this woman's ‘habitual' voice not only was childlike in sound but also quivered and was truly one of the most debilitating voices I have ever heard. When she spoke in tongues, however, her pitch was low and the voice was solid, smooth, and mature-sounding. There was no quiver, no shaking, nothing reminiscent of her ‘habitual' sound. Indeed, she has a remarkably beautiful voice.
I cannot explain speaking in tongues. I have never witnessed this before; however, the voice I heard from Vicky did not surprise me. It is what happens when you breathe and allow your chest to power your sound, thereby taking much of the pressure off the vocal folds (cords). Unfortunately, the majority of the population is not aware of and definitely not using their ‘real' voice. And, while I usually do no discuss faith in my training program, I have always known that your ‘real' voice is your God-given voice.
Vicky said it best, however. She stated, "When I found my new voice I was amazed to realize it is at the exact same pitch as my voice when I speak in tongues. Truly, God does all things well - perfectly well!"
The confirmation for me is that using your ‘real' voice was all in God's plans. Someone once asked me how I knew Jesus had a good voice. The answer is simple. The Son of God would only use his God-given voice.

More commentsWhat a great experience for you both! When I was in Jr. High, there was a man in our church who looked like the homeless people you see on cop shows, and was under psychiatric care. (He'd had a horrilbe life.) He stuttered so badly it was truly hard to understand what he was trying to say. The only times I could understand him were the couple times he prophesied. He spoke what God was saying to his heart and his voice was powerful and smooth, with absolutely no stutter.Just another testimony to God's evident touch in our lives.VictoriaVictoria,That is a testament. Always good to hear stories like this. Even Susan Boyle was something of a testament. The poor woman was laughed at before she even opened her mouth to sing and then the crowd discovered that one should never judge a book by its cover.Thank you for sharing that with us,Nancy
Nancy-this is very interesting and something I have never thought about before. I often ask myself if I would talk to God in the tone I just took with my kids or husband? Something to ponder. Thanks for writing this! It has given me a lot to think about!Laura,Tone certainly is something we should be concerned with. Because I am able to increase my volume without shouting, I never yelled at my kids. I projected my voice instead. There is a quite a difference.Women often wonder why men don't listen? Tone and quality of voice could be the reason. Imagine listening to Fran Drescher day in and day out!Thank you for commenting,Nancy
The thought about adults who speak in a timid, childlike voice were possibly abused is an interesting thought. I wonder how many people have actually studied this theory.Dear Anonymous,Trust me, I have. You would be amazed how many people I have worked with who have had a childlike voice and in every situation, they were able to point to some type of abuse in their early childhood development -- even some who had repressed the memories. [What is even more fascinating are those with multiple personalities and different voices for each character. Again, abuse.]Thanks for commenting,Nancy
Interesting, Nancy. A very unusual story. I'm glad your friend found her voice!JL,Thanks for your comment. Yes, I too am delighted that she found her voice.Nancy
I find your work very interesting. I never knew that there was help for those trapped in another's voice. When greeted by a waitress or check-out attendant, a voice emanating from an adult that sounds as if their foot was caught in a trap is indeed not an asset. Your research puts this all in proper perspective. Keep up the good work, Fellow SW er, Dave PotchakDave,I didn't want to give the impression that we are trapped in another's voice. We are trapped only in the wrong voice being powered by our throat and vocal cords. Weaker, higher in pitch and lacking the resonance and depth that is typical of voices like Sean Connery, Cher, James Earl Jones, and Kathleen Turner. Thanks for your comment,Nancy
When trance mediums channel omnipresent, haunting earthbound lost spirits, their physical voices radically change in alignment with the walk-in spirits presence and reveal another totally different persons inflection ,tone and personality;similarly,in demonic possession,a radical voice change occurs. When this" speaking-in tongues- voice change" happens,is it possible that the same thing is happening? Why speaking in tongues is considered more"God given", than sinister,is curious,to me,given that, perhaps, ones mind-spirit and vocal cords are being usurped by another (discorporate)seeming intelligence.I am being curious not disrespectful or dismissive;paulPaul,Your comments left much for thought. No, I would doubt that Vicky's speaking in tongues was anything but her 'real' voice, something most people are unaware that they possess. What you are referring to is demonic possession or even multiple personality in which the voice that results does not sound at all similar to the individual's habitual or 'real' voice.Interesting though,Nancy
An interesting commentary on an inexplicable phenomena and who am I to question what others believe to be the voice of God?Donald,Yes, it was interesting and revealing. Thanks for reading,Nancy
I don't have any interest or experience in this topic, however, I find it strangely interesting and was able to read it all the way through.Paul,I sometimes look at an article and think, Wow, how do I read this? I empathize but I'm glad you were able to get through it.Nancy
Very informative. I was not sure which way you were going to go with this. Although I can't do it, I have heard others speak of it as well. I love the final paragraph!Shirley,Thank you for reading and commenting. I know in my heart that one's real voice is their God-given voice. What can I say?Nancy
Nancy, I read this article days ago and was called away before I could save my comment. I am so sorry!I, as a child, have seen folks "speaking in tongues," and it scared me!There must be a great deal of satisfaction in helping folks "find their voice."Ken,Thank you for coming back...there is really is such satisfaction and joy that I've been known to cry when I see and hear some of the 'before' and 'after' video clips. What a difference it makes for my clients.Again, my thanks and again, love The Amulet,Nancy
